Here are some of the Activities from last years Woodpeckers Class

Spring Term

The Woodpeckers have had a fabulous Term 4. In science the children have been learning about materials and their properties. They enjoyed investigating magnets and making magnetic games. In history, the children have learnt about Space and the history of Space travel. The Woodpeckers had a super Space Camp Day, in which they visited a planetarium, learned about the Northern Lights and created auroras with chalk. They made a rainbow planet with skittles and observed what happens when effervescent tablets are dropped into a mixture of oil and water to replicate the surface of the sun. The children enjoyed launching a fizzy bottle rocket although it wasn’t very successful. In RE, the children have learned about the Easter story and its significance. On World Book Day, the children listened to lots of stories and voted for their favourite. They created hats on the theme of their favourite story. In DT, the children designed and made mars landers. They investigated the best shock absorbers and then tested their mars landers. They had to make sure their marshmallow Martian landed safely.
Wow, what a busy term!

Autumn 2

The Woodpeckers have had an exciting Term 2. The children have learned about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. The children helped to make a Guy using old clothes and newspaper. They then went over to the forest area and burnt him on a bonfire. In history the children learned about toys from the past and compared them to their toys today. In DT the children designed and made their own pop toys. In Science they learned about food chains in different habitats and made a diorama to show their learning.  At the end of the term things got really exciting when the children performed their nativity Hosana Rock and had a Snowman party day. We even had a visit from Father Christmas!

Autumn 1

The Woodpeckers have had a wonderful first term in Year 1. They have all settled well and everyone has been working very hard. In science, they have been learning about different groups of animals and the habitats they live in. They have learned about what animals need to survive and whether they are carnivores, omnivores or herbivores. In geography, the Woodpeckers have learned about the continents of the world. They have looked at the countries of the UK and the physical and human features of our local area. The children have been learning how to record their own ‘discover and do’ learning on Seesaw using an iPad. They have been learning how to keep themselves safe online and they can say what to do and who to tell if something happens that makes them worried or unhappy when using a computer, tablet or mobile device. In art, the children have looked at paintings by Van Gogh and Monet. They have used different brushstrokes to paint in the same style and have produced their own sunflower and waterlily paintings.
